Giving Tuesday
by Lauren Jacques and Eileen Shea

What is Giving Tuesday?

Since 2012, Giving Tuesday has been a global event to “encourage people to do good.” The event organizers encourage generosity every Tuesday, but the official celebration will be on November 30th this year.

Giving Tuesday started in New York City, and according to the Giving Tuesday website, “Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts, and everyone has something to give.”

Just a few days after Thanksgiving in the U.S., Giving Tuesday is an excellent reminder to show gratefulness to those around us.

How is ARO getting involved?

ARO is all about doing good and helping others. That’s why we offer resources to abuse survivors around the world. We acknowledge we cannot affect the world the way that we desire without support.

This Giving Tuesday, we are asking for your generosity, whether that be with your time as a volunteer, with your platform as an advocate, or with your much-needed financial support as a donor.

On November 30th, 2021, ARO will host a live online event and fundraising campaign.

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement. ARO wants to help inspire collective generosity to build the world we want to live in — one where abuse victims and survivors can proceed with their futures “scot-free” from their abuses, woes, and tortures.

Giving and sharing are both ways to connect with others, but they also help us get to know ourselves better, forgive ourselves, and be more compassionate. “Sharing from the Heart” is the theme of this year’s Giving Tuesday event because we want to create that connection between you and our volunteers, many of whom have personal links to the cause. Our event will focus on sharing the reasons why we’ve chosen to volunteer specifically with ARO, as well as some of our personal experiences with abuse.

This event aims to raise awareness regarding ARO’s mission to position itself as the definitive leader within the Abuse Care Industry. We are working to raise $100,000.00 between now and the live event on November 30th to help support the development of Norm Therapy. ARO’s trademarked service will take abuse victims through an elaborate process of identifying their abusive circumstance(s), strengths, and weaknesses; and will provide cursory solutions towards preparing the victims for more formalized professional counseling, therapies, and possible extraction from their abuse.

This service costs ARO thousands of dollars, and your donation will help develop a cost-free access portal to all abuse-care-related therapeutic needs worldwide.

The unfortunate reality is most of us have either survived or known someone who has been a victim of abuse. There is a lot of power in sharing your story with people you are close to, but you may find it helpful to talk to someone who is more removed from the situation or even share your story publicly like we are doing with this event.

“Sharing from the Heart” means that we are saying it is okay to speak up. We hear you, we are here for you, and you are not alone. We hope our stories inspire you to support our mission and share your own story in a safe and supportive space.

We are actively looking for business sponsors and ambassadors to help us reach our fundraising goal. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please reach out to our Online Events Supervisor, Eileen Shea, at eileens@abuserefuge.org
